Pa 30 lies about 7,500 light-years from Earth and is the leading candidate for the remnant of the guest star recorded in 1181. Its expanding gas forms long, thin filaments that radiate outward like fireworks.
It is thought to have formed in a rare Type Iax supernova that left its central star, IRAS 00500+6713, alive. Chains of bright gas knots line the filaments, revealing fine structure in the expanding debris.
