Googolstars
The lunar surface is covered with impact craters, mountains, and large basins. The near side is centred on 0° longitude and displays broad dark maria; the far side is centred on 180° longitude and is dominated by bright, ancient, heavily cratered highlands.
Lunar maria are not seas but plains formed when ancient basaltic lava filled large impact basins. The brighter highland crust is older, while impact craters and their ray systems preserve a record of collisions throughout the Moon’s history.
