Andromeda Galaxy (M31)
Our nearest large spiral neighbour
Andromeda, also called M31 or NGC 224, is a spiral galaxy about 2.5 million light-years away. Along with the Milky Way, it dominates the Local Group. Its rotating disc contains stars, gas and dark dust lanes; young blue stars trace regions where new stars form. The smaller galaxies M32 and M110 accompany it.
